Scaffolding for Trust (or "guidelines for participation")
Creating Space for Connection, Courage, and Community
This is a difficult moment in our communities. We, as human beings, only come to these kinds of spaces and conversations by intentionally stretching our comfort zones. With that in mind, these guidelines are based in a desire to foster trust in communication.
We are striving to meet the moment and come together not because we agree on everything, but because we believe in the strength of community, the power of listening, and the importance of civil engagement.
To help foster this spirit, we ask all partners and participants to do their best to uphold the following values:
Respect Everyone
We welcome participants from all walks of life. Differences are expected - and valuable - when explored with honesty, empathy, and mutual respect.
Reject Violence and Harassment
Deliberate threats, intimidation, or personal attacks - whether physical, verbal, or symbolic - have no place in our shared spaces.
Listen to Understand
We encourage people to speak from their own experiences and to listen with openness. We ask that participants avoid assumptions about others’ beliefs, motivations, or identities.
See People as Individuals
Avoid stereotypes. Try to avoid judging others for ideas, actions, or affiliations that are not their own.
Impact over Intent
We all make mistakes. It's easy for the impact of our words and actions to not match the good intentions behind them. When someone stumbles - through words, assumptions, or tone - we ask that it be addressed without shame or blame, take responsibility when needed, and offer each other space to grow.
Honor the Moment
Remain mindful that this initiative was born in response to pain and political violence. In all things, we move forward with dignity, humility, and respect - especially for those most affected.

Build Better Trust
As humans we rightfully have long memories, and while it may be difficult, let's assume that all participants are showing up in good faith. There are other times and places for accountability and emphasis on what has happened in the past. This space is an opportunity to create better moments than before, and learn how to build the trust we want to have in each other. The more we learn how to use our experiences well, the more we can Call People In. Its not easy to do. It requires extra thoughtfulness. But the payoff is profound: a new narrative of connection, courage, and community.
